At Pezesha, we understand that diversity, equity, and inclusion (DEI) are more than just ideals—they are the foundation of innovation, resilience, and sustainable economic growth. The recently launched KIM Board Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion (DEI) Report 2024 highlights both progress and persistent challenges in achieving inclusive leadership across Kenyan boardrooms.
One of the most striking findings is that female board representation in Kenya has slightly declined, dropping from 36% in 2021 to 35% in 2024. While this may seem like a small shift, it signals a broader challenge—ensuring that gender diversity efforts do not stagnate but continue to push for more meaningful representation at all levels of leadership.
The report also reveals that women hold just 32.3% of CEO/MD roles and only 21.3% of board chairperson positions. These numbers reflect a deeper gap in executive leadership—one that cannot be solved by boardroom representation alone. It calls for deliberate mentorship, succession planning, and leadership development programs to support women in rising through the ranks.
Another crucial insight is the lack of younger professionals in boardrooms. Leadership remains dominated by individuals aged 46 and above, with many board members holding postgraduate degrees. While experience is invaluable, fresh perspectives from younger leaders are equally essential. A multi-generational approach to governance fosters innovation, adaptability, and long-term sustainability—qualities that today’s rapidly evolving markets demand.
Beyond gender and age, religious and ethnic diversity also require more attention. The report notes that 62% of board members identify as Christians, which highlights the need for broader representation. A truly inclusive boardroom reflects the diversity of the society it serves, ensuring that different perspectives shape strategic decisions.
These findings reaffirm a fundamental truth: inclusive leadership is not just a compliance requirement—it is a strategic imperative. Businesses that embrace DEI principles are better positioned to navigate complexity, drive sustainable growth, and create lasting impact.
At Pezesha, we don’t just advocate for inclusion—we live it. Over 50% of our team is made up of women, a testament to our belief that diverse teams lead to stronger, more innovative solutions. We are committed to fostering inclusive financial ecosystems, ensuring that diverse entrepreneurs have equitable access to capital, and advocating for governance structures that reflect the communities we serve.
As corporate leaders, policymakers, and stakeholders, we all have a role to play in building boardrooms that mirror the richness of our society. The call to action is clear: we must move beyond conversation to implementation—strengthening policies, mentoring diverse talent, and championing DEI at every level. The future of leadership is inclusive. Let’s work together to make it a reality.
