Empowering Early-Stage Entrepreneurs: Pezesha at the Sinapis Pitching Event

Over 50% of startups fail within the first five years, with many struggling to secure funding due to unclear financial models and limited investor readiness.

At Pezesha, we understand that access to capital alone isn’t enough—financial education and business mentorship play a critical role in preparing entrepreneurs for long-term success. That’s why we were honored to participate in the Sinapis Entrepreneurship Pitching Event, where our representative served as a panel judge, evaluating and mentoring eight passionate entrepreneurs at the start of their business journeys. This event marked the culmination of Sinapis’ 9-week training program, equipping early-stage business owners with essential skills in business strategy, financial planning, and investor pitching. Each entrepreneur presented their business model, market opportunity, and funding needs in hopes of securing investment to scale their ventures.

Key Takeaways from the Event:

The Power of Financial Education: Access to training programs is crucial in bridging the gap between great ideas and fundable businesses. Without financial literacy and structured business planning, even the most innovative startups struggle to scale.

Strong Entrepreneurial Spirit: The entrepreneurs were driven and deeply connected to solving real market challenges. Their passion was evident, but many needed further support to refine their business models and articulate their funding needs effectively.

Diverse Business Sectors: Ideas ranged across agribusiness, fintech, retail, and social impact ventures, showcasing Kenya’s growing SME potential. This diversity highlighted the broad spectrum of innovation in Kenya’s SME ecosystem and the need for sector-specific financial solutions.

Gaps in Financial Preparedness: While their business ideas were promising, many entrepreneurs needed stronger financial projections, clearer funding strategies, and a better understanding of capital allocation to attract investors. Investor confidence is often tied to well-structured financial planning, and this remains a crucial area for growth.

Pezesha’s Role & Feedback

As a judge, Pezesha provided constructive feedback to each entrepreneur, emphasizing the importance of:

  • Strengthening financial projections to align with realistic growth expectations.

  • Clearly defining funding requirements and demonstrating a strategic use of capital.

  • Differentiating their businesses in competitive markets with strong value propositions.

In Africa, the failure rate of venture-backed startups is estimated to be between 85-89%(The Genotype of Successful Startups in Africa – Gikera & Vadgama Advocates). This underscores the need for robust financial planning, investor readiness, and strategic growth plans to ensure long-term sustainability.

The startup ecosystem in Kenya continues to thrive, but access to funding remains one of the biggest hurdles for entrepreneurs. Many investors are willing to fund promising ventures, but entrepreneurs must demonstrate financial viability and sustainable growth strategies.

Conclusion

At Pezesha, we remain committed to supporting SMEs with financial literacy, credit access, and funding solutions that help them build sustainable businesses. We look forward to engaging in more initiatives like this that empower entrepreneurs to grow and scale successfully.
